The 10 Best Things About Being a Gemini, by Gem & Eye the Toucans We asked Gem & Eye, the twin toucans who make up the Gemini Astrominal, to write a list of the ten best things about being a Gemini (21 May – 20 June). They wrote ten each. Neither of them would cut a single one of the other’s. So here are all twenty: ten best things, with Gem’s answer first and Eye’s underneath. Technically that’s a top twenty. Technically, that’s very Gemini. 1. We’re never lonely Gem: There are two of us. If one of us gets bored, the other one is right there to be interesting. Eye: It’s usually me being interesting. Gem would like it noted that this is not true. 2. We can talk to anyone Gem: The postie. The bus driver. A pigeon. A Gemini can start a conversation anywhere. Eye: Ending one is a different skill. We’re working on it. Together. Out loud. 3. We learn fast Gem: Tell a Gemini something once, and we’ll remember it forever. Eye: Then we’ll tell it to someone else. Then we’ll add a bit to make it better. 4. We’re ruled by Mercury Gem: Mercury is the messenger planet, the fastest one round the Sun. One lap takes 88 days. Eye: We’d have done it in 60, but we stopped to chat. 5. We’re funny Gem: Quick jokes, silly voices, an impression of your teacher that’s slightly too good. Eye: I do the voices. Gem does the timing. Gem says it’s the other way round. It isn’t. 6. We see both sides Gem: Every story has two sides, and we’ve got two heads. That’s not a coincidence. Eye: It’s possibly a coincidence. 7. We’re curious about everything Gem: Why is the sky blue? Why do cats sit in boxes? Eye: Why do toucans have such big beaks? (To look magnificent. We checked.) 8. We adapt to anything Gem: New school, new town, new game with confusing rules? A Gemini works it out in ten minutes. Eye: And teaches everyone else in eleven. 9. We’re great at parties Gem: We’ll talk to the shy kid, the loud kid and the grandparents. By the end, everyone’s friends. Eye: We’ll also talk to the dog. Especially the dog. The dog is usually the best conversation. 10. We’re never, ever boring Gem: You might not always know what a Gemini will do next. Eye: Neither will we. That’s the fun part. The 10 Best Things About Being an Aries, by Arri the Rhino We asked Arri the Rhino, the Aries Astrominal, to write a list of the ten best things about being an Aries (21 March – 19 April). He wrote it in four minutes. Then he asked if he could do it again, faster. 1. We go first First in the queue. First up the hill. First to say “I’ll do it” before anyone’s finished explaining what “it” is. Somebody has to lead. It might as well be someone who’s already started. 2. We’re brave Spiders, thunderstorms, the deep end of the pool, the last biscuit when Taur is looking. Aries don’t do scared. We do “interesting”. 3. We have energy for days Other signs need a nap. Aries need a second activity. And a third one, in case the second one finishes early. 4. We’re ruled by Mars Mars is the red planet, the fiery one, the one with the biggest volcano in the solar system. That’s our planet. We didn’t choose it. It chose us, and frankly it chose well. 5. We’re honest If your hat is silly, an Aries will tell you it’s silly. Then we’ll tell you we like silly hats. Both are true. We don’t do sneaky. 6. We never hold a grudge We get cross fast. We get over it faster. By the time you’ve thought of a clever reply, we’ve forgotten what the argument was about and invited you to play football. 7. The 10 Best Things About Being a Pisces, by Pike the Pike We asked Pike the Pike, the Pisces Astrominal, to write a list of the ten best things about being a Pisces (19 February – 20 March). She started straight away. Then she noticed a cloud shaped like a seahorse. Then she wrote a poem about the seahorse. Then she came back and finished the list. It’s lovely. The poem is also lovely. 1. We have the best imaginations A Pisces can turn a puddle into an ocean and a cardboard tube into a telescope. The world is good. The world in a Pisces’s head has extra sparkles. 2. We’re creative Painting, music, stories, dance. Pisces are the artists of the zodiac. I play the saxophone. Badly, some say. Beautifully, I say. 3. We’re kind A Pisces feels what other people feel. If you’re sad, we’ll be sad with you, and then we’ll find a way to cheer you up. 4. We’re ruled by Neptune Neptune is the planet of dreams and the deep blue sea. It’s very far away and very blue. So are my thoughts, most afternoons. 5. The 10 Best Things About Being a Taurus, by Taur the Bull We asked Taur the Bull, the Taurus Astrominal, to write a list of the ten best things about being a Taurus (20 April – 20 May). He said yes. Then he made a cup of tea. Then he got a biscuit. Then he sat in his favourite chair. Then, and only then, he began. 1. We know what we like I’ve had the same favourite sandwich since I was small. It’s still the best sandwich. Why would I change it? You don’t swap a winning team. 2. We’re loyal Once you’re a Taurus’s friend, you stay a Taurus’s friend. Forever. Even if you move to Australia. We’ll write. Slowly, but we’ll write. 3. We’re very calm Other signs panic. Taurus considers the situation, has a snack, and then deals with it. Usually the snack fixes about half of it. 4. We appreciate the good stuff Soft blankets. Warm bread. The smell of a garden after rain. Taurus notices the nice things in life, and makes sure to enjoy them properly. 5. The 10 Best Things About Being a Virgo, by Virgo the Sheep We asked Virgo the Sheep, the Virgo Astrominal, to write a list of the ten best things about being a Virgo (23 August – 22 September). Virgo was a little shy about writing about Virgos, so we said it was a list, not a speech. Virgo loves a list. The list arrived early, with page numbers. 1. We notice everything The typo on the menu. The picture that’s slightly wonky. The friend who’s gone a bit quiet. Virgos see the details, and the details matter. 2. We’re helpers If something needs doing, a Virgo has probably already done it. Quietly. Without a fuss. Then tidied up afterwards. 3. We’re organised Our pencil cases have sections. Our sections have labels. Our labels are in alphabetical order. It’s not a problem. It’s a system. 4. We’re ruled by Mercury Mercury is the planet of clever thinking. Gemini got the chatty half. We got the careful half. We’re happy with that. 5. We’re kind A Virgo won’t shout about the nice things they do. They’ll just do them. You might only find out years later. That’s fine. We weren’t counting. (We were counting. It’s 47.) 6. We’re brilliant at fixing things Broken toy, tangled necklace, confusing homework. Pass it to a Virgo. Give us ten minutes and some peace and quiet. 7. The 10 Best Things About Being a Scorpio, by Score the Lobster We asked Score the Lobster, the Scorpio Astrominal, to write a list of the ten best things about being a Scorpio (23 October – 21 November). She agreed to share ten. She has more. She keeps those in a locked box, at the bottom of the sea, under a rock that looks like a different rock. 1. We’re loyal If a Scorpio is on your side, they are on your side completely. For life. Possibly longer. We don’t do half-friends. 2. We’re mysterious Nobody knows quite what a Scorpio is thinking. Sometimes that includes the Scorpio. We like it that way. 3. We’re brilliant detectives Missing sock? Lost homework? Who ate the last biscuit? Give a Scorpio ten minutes. (It was Taur. It’s always Taur.) 4. We’re determined Once a Scorpio decides to do something, it’s getting done. A lobster with a goal is a lobster that does not let go. 5. We can keep a secret Tell a Scorpio a secret and it’s safe forever. We don’t gossip. We do know everything, though. Those are different. 6. We’re tough Lobsters have armour. Scorpios have resilience.
