Gift Ideas for an Aquarius: 12 Presents, Reviewed by Aqua the Pelican

Looking for gift ideas for an Aquarius? Buying for an Aquarius (20 January – 18 February) is unpredictable, because an Aquarius is unpredictable. They might love the present. They might love the box more, and turn it into a working model of the solar system.

Aquarius is ruled by Uranus, planet of invention and surprise. Aquarians are original, independent and always three steps ahead of everyone, including themselves. Their Astrominal is Aqua the Pelican, the Water Carrier who carries her water in her beak, because a jug would have been far too obvious.

We asked Aqua to review twelve gift ideas. She said she’d rather invent a thirteenth. We negotiated.

1. A science kit

Crystals, circuits, volcanoes: anything that fizzes, glows or goes bang (safely).

Aqua says: “I followed the instructions exactly. Then I followed them again, but sideways. The second one was better.”

2. A 3D printing pen

Draw in the air, and it stays there.

Aqua says: “I’ve drawn a chair. It’s a terrible chair. It’s also the only chair of its kind in the world. Sit on it. Actually, don’t.”

3. A build-your-own robot kit

For the Aquarius who’s always wondered how things think.

Aqua says: “I’ve named him Gerald. Canny’s plant is also called Gerald. They’ve met. It was awkward.”

4. A donation in their name

Aquarius is the humanitarian of the zodiac. A gift that helps others suits them perfectly.

Aqua says: “A tree planted in my name. That’s the best present. It’ll be here long after the robot rebels.”

5. A planetarium trip

The whole universe, in an afternoon.

Aqua says: “Uranus spins on its side. Everyone thinks that’s strange. I think it’s just thinking differently.”

6. A really good water bottle

The Water Carrier, carrying water. Finally, a gift that respects the brief.

Aqua says: “Practical. Reusable. But, honestly? I’ll probably still carry it in my beak.”

7. Odd socks, on purpose

A set of deliberately mismatched socks.

Aqua says: “Matching socks are a social construct. I’m wearing one stripy and one with a rocket on it. They’re very happy together.”

8. A coding kit

For building games, apps or something nobody’s thought of yet.

Aqua says: “Hello, world. That’s the first thing you learn. My second thing was ‘goodbye, homework’. It’s in beta.”

9. A book of big ideas

Philosophy for kids, the history of inventions, the future of everything.

Aqua says: “I read a chapter, then I lie on the floor and think about it for an hour. People call that daydreaming. I call it research.”

10. A solar-powered gadget

A radio, a lamp, a little fan: free energy from the biggest power station there is.

Aqua says: “The sun’s been running this whole time and nobody sends it a bill. I find that inspiring.”

11. A visit to a weird museum

A museum of bad art, of mechanical music, of things people have lost.

Aqua says: “Normal museums are lovely. But a museum of left-handed scissors? That’s where I meet my people.”

12. An Astrominals Aquarius birthday card

Whatever you choose, put it with a card that gets them. The Astrominals zodiac birthday cards feature Aqua bringing everyone together at a community gathering, framed by a border of true-to-sign Aquarius traits.

Aqua says: “Everyone’s invited. Even the weird ones. Especially the weird ones. That’s the whole point.”

Aqua’s three rules for buying an Aquarius a present

  1. Be original. “If it’s in every shop window, I’ve already decided not to like it.”
  2. Feed the brain. “Give me something to figure out. If I can’t take it apart, I’ll find a way.”
  3. Make the world better. “Bonus points if the present helps someone else too. Double bonus points if it glows.”

So, which present would Aqua choose for herself?

Aqua says: “The robot kit. I’ll teach it to plant trees. Then I’ll teach it to wear odd socks. One revolution at a time.”
